What Size Do I Need The first step in selecting a rug is to measure the area where you will place your rug. Consider the minimum and maximum size rug which would fit your room as this will give you a wider selection of rugs to choose. The size of the rug is an extremely important consideration; if it's the wrong size it can look awkward and throw off the proportions of a room. When measuring, pay attention to the architectural elements in the room (a fireplace, for example, also tends to be the focus in a room) and other details (traffic pattern, floor vents, etc).
General Tips If the rug is in a high traffic area, make sure that it covers the space completely, otherwise you'll be inviting trips, falls and other accidents. However, in other rooms, leave at least 18 inches of space around a rug to give the area 'breathing room'.
Dining Room When measuring for a dining room rug, the rug should be of adequate size to move chairs away from the table without falling off the rug. A rule of thumb is to measure your table, and add two feet to all four sides. The resulting dimensions will be your minimum rug size.
Family Room In family rooms or living rooms, choose a rug size that covers at least the length of your sofa. A 5 foot x 8 foot rug is usually the smallest size used in family rooms. Select a rug size that will either accommodate all your furniture, or none of it. So either pick a rug that you can arrange your furniture around (making sure that the rug extends the length and width of your furniture) or select a rug that can accommodate your couch, coffee table and side chairs.
Bedroom In a bedroom, rugs should extend beyond a king size bed about 18 inches, although for smaller beds, this can be reduced to 12 inches.
